Lettuce is a near-effortless crop

Lettuce is among one of the easiest crops to grow and of the few that can be planted in Hurricane Valley before the last frost all the way through the season, even surviving the first frost of the winter season. I grow many leaf types (buttercrunch, baby leaf mix) in the same bed, throw in handfuls of gourmet blends (arugula, mizuna), sprinkle in cilantro and edible flower seeds (nasturtium) and, to complete the instant salad combination, I add a border of short, bushy basil (Finissimo) seed for some sweetness in the mix. Lettuce can be grown in full sun but bolts (sets seed) quickly in our desert heat. Use shade from trees, shrubs and fences, interplant lettuce with taller plants (tomatoes, peas, peppers) that provide shade as they mature or create shade using shade cloth supported by wire hoops. I sprinkle more seed between the rows once each month until first frost for a continuous, fresh supply. Use a gentle spray or misting nozzle twice a day in the morning and late afternoon to keep the seedbed moist until germination (five to seven days). When the lettuce has a few sets of leaves (1- to 2-inches long), lightly lay a thin 1- to 2-inch layer of straw between the rows. The mulch helps hold in moisture, keeps the soil cool and minimizes soil and mud accumulation on the leaves. Harvest (at three to four weeks) in early morning before watering, clean and process immediately for week-long storage. Cut or pick the leaves, fill sink with cold water and gently submerge the leaves. Soak for a few minutes, allowing the soil and debris to settle to the bottom. Swish the lettuce around a bit, then spin or dry thoroughly on paper towels before packaging in bags.

The Indiana Supreme Court reinstated evidence in two Allen County felony cases, finding Fort Wayne police acted appropriately in executing a “no-knock” search warrant.

The Indiana Court of Appeals last June tossed out evidence in the two cases, which can now proceed to trial after Tuesday’s decision.

The cases of Cornelius Lacey Sr. and Damion Wilkins are separate but involve one search of Lacey’s home, where Wilkins was present. In 2008, Fort Wayne police received tips that Lacey was selling marijuana and cocaine, according to the ruling. Surveillance was conducted on Lacey’s business and home, including police examining Lacey’s trash. In the trash they found mail to Wilkins.

A search warrant for illegal drugs and weapons was obtained for the home. On Dec. 5, the Fort Wayne Emergency Services Team chose not to knock and announce its presence because of the criminal backgrounds of Lacey and Wilkins.

As a result of the warrant, Lacey was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance. Wilkins was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and possession of marijuana.

The defense filed a motion to suppress the evidence that was denied by Allen Superior Court Judge John Surbeck.

The case was then appealed directly to the Indiana Court of Appeals. The appellate judges found the search warrant itself was proper but ruled against the manner in which it was served because police ignored a general “knock and announce” rule. According to that decision, there were no circumstances that necessitated a no-knock entry, such as if a person inside the home became aware of the police and tried to escape or destroy evidence.

But the Indiana Supreme Court has now upheld Surbeck’s original decision, saying any no-knock entry here was justified because of the concern for police officer safety based upon the prior criminal conduct of Lacey and Wilkins.

And the decision said police do not have to obtain specific authority from a judge beforehand to execute a “no-knock entry.”
