CHARLEY SOARES: It's the season for winter flounder

This handsome winter flounder did not come from local waters. In the past, any angler worth his salt could head out into Mt. Hope Bay and catch enough flounder for dinner, but that is not the case today. Today, the author awakens at 3:30 a.m. and drives 89 miles to Wellfleet on lower Cape Cod for the opportunity to catch eight flounder. That nearly 200-mile round-trip at an expense of about $80 is a far cry from fishing from the Brightman Street Bridge or one of the nearby piers to catch supper. With the possible exception of sea robins, dogfish and skates, our fisheries are in serious trouble. Photo Charley Soares    According to my selective memory, I look back on Good Friday weather as seldom being all that warm and seasonal. As a student at St. Michaels catholic school in the village, I remember those long cold marches from the classroom double file to the church on Essex Street where we lined up for the confessions and the stations of the cross. I can still see Joe Jax, Jimmy Satch, Joe Bottles, Russ and Cardoza walking in lock step to the directives of the nuns at the head and rear of the procession. We were participating in an unwavering tradition during all of the eight years of our edification in those gray wooden buildings. Many of my friends and regular deckmates also had the day off, so it was never a problem to put together a crew to head off in search of a bucket of winter flounder. Despite the fact that this year our Easter season is about as late as I can ever recall, the weather this Friday is nothing to rave about and my recollections of recent Good Friday weather is not much better. When you are still stoking the wood stove on the last weekend of April, it is a cold and windy season. Of all those trips, one in particular stands out. On that morning, I awoke to gusty winds and temperatures in the high thirties. Jeff Branco and Eddie (Blackie) Joaquim, bundled up for a snowstorm and met me at the house where we loaded up the Bronco and trailered the boat to the nose-bleed ramp on the Portsmouth side of the Tiverton Basin. By the time we splashed the boat, the wind was howling out of the west and our plans to fish the mouth of Nanaquaket Pond were scuttled. In those days, an astute fisherman could locate flounder in numerous places but their preference was for soft mud bottom where they fed on worms and minute marine life.
