Wood furniture importers double up on finishes

Some new imported collections shown at the High Point Market offered two finishes on every SKU, effectively doubling the size of each collection.

An example is Hooker Furniture's coastal/cottage-inspired Harbour Pointe, which has a dark cappuccino and a light oyster finish on each SKU, bringing the count to 90 pieces. Hooker has offered two finishes on select pieces in the past, but this was the first time that it has done so with every SKU in a whole home collection.

"The availability of both finishes in Harbour Pointe generated more interest and volume than it would have if we had introduced this collection in just one finish," said product development specialist Erica Wingo.

Fine Furniture Design offers two finishes on the 45 pieces in its country French-inspired Vintage Classics collection, which doubles the SKU count to 90. The options are a traditional fruitwood tone with light distressing, and a more heavily distressed soft casual finish with dusty wax hangup.

"We are real excited about the ability to use good woods (cherry veneers) with a casual finish," said Jim Adams, vice president of design and marketing. "Most use poplar and rubberwood with this type of finish."

The company also has two finishes on every SKU in its Park South and Lake View collections launched in 2009.
Universal Furniture offered two finishes on each SKU in its first Paula Deen licensed collection in 2009. Based on its success then, the company did the same this market with its 42- piece addition to the collection, Paula Deen Down Home.

Sister company Pennsylvania House offered two finishes in a whole home collection for the first time. The 27-piece Alfresco offers every piece in a mid-tone cappuccino and a lighter latte.

Most retailers who purchased Down Home bought it in both finishes, while dealers bought Alfresco along geographic lines, with the lighter finish selling better in coastal areas, said Don Essenberg, a vice president of sales.

Offering multiple finishes is nothing new for domestic producers, who promote the ability to build custom orders as a competitive advantage.

Importers, however, must forecast sales and inventory further out, which could cost them if they're wrong. Importers interviewed for this story said they weren't overly concerned about that risk and will carry inventory in both overseas and domestic warehouses.
