Devil Driver

In the summer of 2003 I stood outside the sometimes muddied, oft times dusty grounds of Alpine Valley, site of the greatest metal shows I have ever seen, namely Ozzfest. In previous years I had gotten backstage with special thanks to members of Cradle of Filth and God Forbid. Now let me tell you, once you drink free beer in a huddle of rockstars like Dimebag Darrell, Vinnie Paul and Zakk Wylde… there ain’t nothin’ that compares. Being a six year veteran, I knew that if you want to meet the bands, you gotta hang by the busses. Equipped with my metal tee and 12 ounces of brown paper bag, I wandered observantly until eventually bumping into a fellow headbanger and we got to talking. Through conversation I learned that his name was Jon Miller and he played in this band called DevilDriver who had just finished their first album and were lucky enough to acquire Dez Fafara from Coal Chamber as their vocalist. I had explained my plight to Jon that I had come down without a ticket and was hoping to ‘find a way in’, while he didn’t have any passes with him he was kind enough to walk me through the main entrance. After the admittance through the unholy gates he said I’d have access to the grass seats and second stage area but not backstage or seating. He then invited me to meet up with him when Black Label Society came on the main stage. I gleefully accepted his invitation and enjoyed beers with the rest of DevilDriver in the sound booth while the sun settled on that eventful day. I first heard the band on the Freddy vs. Jason soundtrack with their song “Swinging the Dead” which consequently led to purchasing their self-titled freshman album- DevilDriver.  Eight years later, the debut holds strong yet pales in comparison to their now five album strong catalog. I have been a devout fan and even a member of the official fan-club ‘The Wretched’. DevilDriver continues to amaze with not only the rate of development but their growth as not only a driving force in the metal scene but as unassailable arbiter of what the current state of metal is capable of and should work towards achieving. Following the first release there was a renovation in membership, most notably the addition of Mike Spreitzer to the quintet. Beast, their latest offering, has since eclipsed the preceding releases as the band has developed and refined a much heavier and ‘against the grain’ technique while maintaining the sound that initially attracted fans.
